Overview
Synthetic progestogen available in oral (Provera) and IM depot (Depo-Provera) formulations. Oral form has a 24h half-life; IM depot provides contraceptive/therapeutic coverage for ~3 months. Used in menopausal HRT, contraception, and occasionally transfem HRT. IM depot suppresses gonadal function effectively.
Mechanism of Action
Synthetic progestogen with progestational and anti-estrogenic activity. Also has glucocorticoid and anti-androgenic activity at higher doses. IM depot form suppresses ovulation for ~3 months.
