Overview

Intermediate-acting insulin. Cloudy suspension that must be mixed before injection. Peak action at ~4-10 hours, duration ~12-18 hours. Being replaced by modern long-acting analogues but still widely used globally.

Mechanism of Action

Human insulin complexed with protamine and zinc to form a crystalline suspension. Slow dissolution from subcutaneous depot provides intermediate duration of action.
